World Wide Packets Lights Närpiö

Finnish municipality embraces Active Ethernet to bring fiber to the home

Spokane Valley, WA and Närpiö, Finland, September 13, 2004 — World Wide Packets, the leading provider of Ethernet Access networking solutions, announced today that its LightningEdge® solution is being deployed as part of a municipal network in Närpiö , Finland . With the help of Neterum and Adventus Group, respected systems integrators, Närpiö has one of the most advanced networks in all of Europe .

Närpiö is deploying an open access network, which providers can use to offer IP-based services such as the triple play of voice, video and data, as well as emerging services such as Video on Demand and telemedicine. Most incumbent carriers were reluctant to build out a similar network due to Närpiö's geographic spread: 25 towns and villages dispersed over approximately 1000 square kilometers.

“For a community of our size, building our own network was the only choice,” said Andreas Ek, Managing Director, Dynamo Net, the network operating company owned by Närpiö to run this fiber network. “Working with Neterum and Adventus Group, we selected World Wide Packets because their solution provides Carrier Class resiliency and QoS. Our other main requirements were the network's ability to support a variety of services, and ability to scale with our projected economic growth.”

Närpiö's network can offer speeds of up to 1 GB to the subscriber. Unlike Enterprise focused access solutions, LightningEdge can guarantee a minimum bandwidth per application – vital for applications such as VoIP or Video over IP – which radically increases SLA compliance and customer satisfaction.

“Närpiö went from having ADSL access for a limited part of the population to now offering one of the fastest networks in all of Europe ,” said Matti Rautanen, Sales Manager, Neterum Oy. “Using World Wide Packets Ethernet access gear eases the initial design, management and widespread roll out of such a complex and powerful network.”

“Few municipalities in Europe have taken a proactive stance in delivering to its residents the most advanced services at the fastest possible speed,” said Dave Curry, President and CEO, World Wide Packets. “Närpiö proves that both municipalities and carriers are now driving the market to compete more on service differentiation and less on price. Because of this, both residential and business customers will reap greater benefits regardless of provider.”
