WORLD WIDE PACKETS AND SAIC TEAM TO DEMONSTRATE FLOW THROUGH PROVISIONING OF SUBSCRIBER SERVICES ACROSS A MULTI-VENDOR, GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED SERVICE NETWORK
Demonstration provides a sneak preview of the power of customer-self provisioning in triple-play networks
Spokane, WA - July 24, 2002 – In an impressive display of the latest in end-to-end Gigabit Ethernet service network capabilities, World Wide Packets’ recent conference, “Community Networks 2002: Negotiating the Path to Success” hosted a live demonstration of real time flow through customer- initiated, service activation.
From the podium, Jerry Campeau, Program Manager and Senior Network Engineer for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) delighted the audience by provisioning a telephony service in real time from a laptop using an SAIC web-based customer service portal. Campeau commented. “It took approximately three and a half minutes to provision the service in real time, on the fly, over the public Internet using an ordinary laptop.”
The key is the integration of SAIC’s RapidApps™ software and World Wide Packets LightningEdge™ Network Supervisor to provide flow-through provisioning to activate subscriber services, whether voice, video or data. In simple terms, a subscriber submits a service request via a web-based customer service portal to a RapidApps server. RapidApps validates the customer’s credit, service termination points, and verifies all the necessary network resources are available to support the service request. Once these steps have been completed, RapidApps coordinates the provisioning of the service with all the individual network element management systems, which in turn execute the commands necessary to enable the service. Throughout the process, RapidApps continuously reports progress and status to the customer portal, enabling the customer to have a real-time indication of their order. The result is self-provisioning in the hands of the end user.
Said Dave Curry, President and COO of World Wide Packets, “the benefits of customer self-provisioning have long been discussed, but implementations to date have either been restricted to a single vendor’s products, or fallen significantly short on functionality, usability, and value.” Curry continued, “This demonstration highlights the power of using Internet enabled operations, and business support systems, to provision converged services using IP. All the elements required to enable this service were geographically dispersed; with elements located in California, New Jersey, and Washington states.”
Chris Boyd, Director of Business Development for SAIC added that the demonstration was a significant milestone in the future of self provisioned services for both the end user as well as the service provider. Said Boyd, “Enabling the end user to remotely go out over the public internet and complete a service request in less than 4 minutes without a truck roll is revolutionary, highly satisfying to the customer, cost effective for all parties, and best of all, enables revenue generation to commence immediately.”
The demonstration also highlighted how communities can successfully utilize a hosted model for OSS/BSS capabilities. The hosted or ASP model is especially attractive to Community Network providers due to its attractive “pay-per-use” scheme, thereby reducing high up-front OSS/BSS acquisition costs.
