WORLD WIDE PACKETS CONNECTS WASHINGTON COMMUNITY WITH FIBER TO THE SUBSCRIBER® NETWORK

Mason County PUD No. 3 selects World Wide Packets to provide automated meter reading and converged services connections to business and residential customers

Spokane, WA and Mason County WA - May 6,2002 – World Wide Packets Fiber to the Subscriber solution is connecting businesses and residents in Mason County, Washington to a high speed broadband network deployed by Mason County Public Utility District No. 3. Phase One of the project will deliver over 1,000 connections.

After implementing automated meter reading, the PUD will go on to wholesale network capacity to service providers offering internet access, broadcast and cable television channels, video-on-demand, and local and long distance telephone service, all over IP, to area businesses, schools and residents.

Mason County PUD No. 3 is joining a growing number of utilities, both domestic and international, seeking to leverage both the reliability of their utility delivery systems and their loyal customer bases into telecom services. Ultimately the benefits accrue to the community in the form of economic stimulus and improved services. Says Joel Myer, public affairs manager for the PUD, "They [utilities] can make a long-term investment to provide low cost, highly reliable networks to the communities they serve. PUD 3's goal is to provide the kind of service to its customers that enhances their quality of life and promotes community development."

"World Wide Packets has been a first rate partner. Its expertise in both the technical and practical aspects of deploying a next generation solution has significantly benefited this project," said Jeff Skinner, Mason County PUD No. 3 telecommunications engineer.

World Wide Packets CEO Bernard Daines expressed confidence in the future of utilities and telecom services. "Utilities like PUD 3 are changing the model for service delivery. By adopting a wholesale and retail split between infrastructure and services, they are creating enormous opportunity both for consumers and service providers of all kinds."
