NETERGY'S AUDACITY™ ICs PROVIDING VOIP CAPABILITY FOR WORLD WIDE PACKETS' LIGHTNINGEDGE™ SERIES
SANTA CLARA, CA—11 February, 2002 – Netergy Microelectronics, Inc., a subsidiary of 8x8, Inc. (NASDAQ: EGHT), announced today that Spokane, WA-based World Wide Packets (www.wwp.com), the pioneering solutions provider for Ethernet broadband connectivity, has chosen Netergy's Audacity™ IC family to provide the VoIP (voice-over-Internet-Protocol) capability for their LightningEdge Access Portal™ series. World Wide Packets' LightningEdge Access Portal products provide a gigabit of dedicated bandwidth for simultaneous transmission of voice, video and data. World Wide Packets' Gigabit Ethernet™ over fiber is designed to satisfy the vast demand for "last mile" bandwidth, scalability and longevity.
Netergy's Audacity processor family is an ideal solution for building cost-effective, high-quality IP telephones, integrated access devices and customer premise gateways for VoIP networks. Based on an advanced, proprietary architecture, the Audacity processor combines a single high-performance RISC processor with DSP instruction set extensions that accelerate voice processing functions, with a very high-speed 32-channel memory controller and on-chip SRAM, so no external SRAM or DRAM is required. Netergy's Veracity™ software stacks implement industry standard VoIP protocols - H.323v2, MGCP, SIP and MEGACO. The Veracity software also includes an industry standard POSIX-compliant operating system, TCP/IP stack, comprehensive network services and a complete audio codec library with audio support services.
"With the demand for ever faster Internet access, the potential of voice and video applications, and the promise of a myriad of applications in home automation and smart appliances, the marketplace is scrambling to deliver innovative optical broadband solutions," explained Bernard Daines, CEO and founder of World Wide Packets. "Netergy's Audacity chipsets are allowing us to add voice-over-packet capability to our popular LightningEdge Access Portals, enabling us to enhance the bundled services we provide to manufacturers and ultimately to consumers and enterprises."
Philip Bednarz, Netergy's president and CEO said, "We're pleased that World Wide Packets has chosen Netergy's Audacity ICs and Veracity software to enhance their LightningEdge integrated access devices with our voice-over-Internet-Protocol capability. A typical example application of Netergy-enabled LightningEdge Portals is the recently announced deployment by Nuera Communications and World Wide Packets to bring high-speed, telephone, data, voice and video service to Grant County's utility customers in Washington State over a converged gigabit Ethernet communications line. This implementation of Netergy's technology validates that the market is realizing the benefits of multiple broadband services enabled by converged voice and data network solutions."
Michael Greeson, senior analyst with Dallas, TX-based market research firm Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com), noted, "Our research indicates that a growing number of small municipalities, rural cooperatives, and county utility groups throughout the nation are moving to build their own broadband networks and beginning to offer voice, video, and data services to their residents. The Grant County PUD project is only the first in what we believe will be a tide of announcements from localities beginning to build out their own broadband infrastructure. By working with innovative solutions providers like Netergy and World Wide Packets, localities will be able to deliver high-speed, multi-service broadband to their residents in a cost-effective manner."
